Creativity Beyond Art

In today's post, I want to share a story about creativity and how it's not always about art in the traditional sense. When I graduated from college, teaching jobs were incredibly competitive. Despite this, I landed a job as a 6th-grade teacher at a local Catholic elementary school. The salary wasn't grand ($12,265), but it was a start.

As time went on, I knew I needed to aim higher, to secure a position in a public school. Despite sending out numerous applications, I wasn't getting any responses. That's when I decided to think outside the box.

A Creative Approach to Career Advancement

One day, an idea struck me. I decided to visit my old elementary school, where Mr. Gray, my former principal, was still in charge. To my surprise, he remembered me fondly. While he didn't have any openings, he was kind enough to make a few calls. This led to an interview with Mrs. Bachman, my favorite first-grade teacher, now a principal at another school. The interview felt more like a catch-up between old friends, and it eventually led to a job offer with a salary that felt like a fortune to me at the time.

Creativity in the Classroom

In my new role, I brought creativity into the classroom. We started a class newspaper to raise money, listened to classic rock while working, and even transformed the classroom into a Halloween haunted house. These creative ventures not only brought joy and learning to my students but also helped me stand out as a teacher.

The Essence of Creativity

This experience taught me that creativity is about the process. It begins with our thoughts and how we approach challenges, whether in careers, relationships, or personal goals. Creativity isn't limited to painting or writing; it's about thinking outside the box in everyday life.

I encourage you to start journaling your creative ideas, no matter how outlandish they may seem. Just like my unexpected visit to Mr. Gray's office, sometimes the most unusual ideas can lead to the most wonderful outcomes.

Wrapping Up

Thank you for sharing your time with me today. Remember, each of us is a masterpiece in the making, and every day is an opportunity to add vibrant strokes to our life's canvas. I hope you're inspired to think creatively in all aspects of your life and to show up in your life like the masterpiece you are, because you, my friends, are the artwork. Have a fabulous day!
